Classic Southern novel

Published when she was just 23-years old, Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter was an immediate best seller making McCullers a literary sensation. The story of misfits in a small Georgia mill town, reveals the spiritual isolation of the human condition and addresses racial tensions in the 1930s South. McCullers evokes compassion for her characters by allowing the reader a glimpse into their inner lives. This novel still resonates today and is on the Modern Library Associations 100 Best Novels list and Time MagazinesĀ 100 best English-language novels published between 1923-2005. Take time this summer to read this classic American novel, but for now check out this excerpt.
